Continuing our interest in 1st Avenue, we turn our attention today to views looking south. At first, this shot taken from 41st Street and 1st Avenue showed nothing unusual ‒ until we spotted a canopy leading into a building that turned out to be No. 5.
A second photo ‒ taken on the same date, February 21, 1931 ‒ seems all about the Socony sign, which fronts a gas station. But again, a close-up view is more telling:

Fascinating! Thanks for posting.
ReplyDeleteThose old stores seem never to have been open since I’ve lived in Tudor City. About 30 yrs. Were there stores in the past?
ReplyDeleteAccording to the 10/4/2016 post, there used to be a a radio shop and Studebaker showroom in the arcade below No.5. The arcade got removed and replaced with a sidewalk running below the building when the First Avenue roadway was widened to accommodate the south portal of the tunnel that goes by the United Nations.
DeleteThanks for such great historical data and pictures :)
