Even More MISCELLANY

Time again to clear off the desk and share some miscellaneous items.   

                           First is the shedding of the leaves of the London Plane trees along Tudor City Place, an annual occurrence that inaugurates the winter season. Mauricio Cegueda captures this colorful event on the Tudor City Facebook page, above.

A landscape made in early 1927, featuring no. 45, all by itself in a hazy fog. 

Dutch colonist David De Voor arrived in 1677 to oversee farm land that included Prospect Hill. No. 25 commemorated him with this stained glass window, one of the few windows bearing a name. Thanks to Sally Hill for the photo.

One of the tax record series, this depicts 39th Street and 2nd Avenue, looking north. The Woodstock takes top billing, backed up by No. 25, lurking in the shadows.

Last but not least is this Spiderman ad featuring the lead taking a brief nap, presumably dreaming about Tudor City. This too came via Sally Hill, nothing gets by her. Thanks Sally!

Stained Glass for Christmas

A friend of ours recently complained that we don't cover stained glass nearly enough. So to remedy that, here are some pictures made of the windows of No. 25. Let the holidays begin.

ARTIFACT: 1929 Postcard Set

Artifact of the day is this set of six postcards, which depict No. 45, No. 25, Prospect Place and the Manor, the South Park, the Coffee House, and The North Park.

Frankly, the cards are nothing special with a muddy sepia and green color palette. But we did find some interesting details, expanded and expounded on, below.

Closeup on the roof of No. 45, mysteriously signless ‒ no doubt because the image is an artist's illustration masquerading as a photograph. The building's weathervane, however, is plainly seen.

The South Park, showing its lich gate. The rockpiles are hazards on the Tudor City's miniature golf course, then in full swing.

Sunlight through the stained glass windows of No. 25's coffee house. 

A lady beneath the pergola contemplates the privet hedge and the topiary.

All the postcards bear the same logo on the back, above. The effusive copy suggests that they were produced by the French Company. 

THEN AND NOW

1988

Above, the plaque at the entryway of No. 45, bracketed by two stained glass lanterns, in 1988.  These appear to be the building's original lanterns, by then in a state of disrepair ‒ particularly the fixture at right, missing an entire glass panel. 

2020

The lanterns were removed at some point in the 1990s. Although nothing like the originals, the replacements have a acquired a vintage patina after 25+ years outdoors.
